In 1988 he and Stacie King led the Sooners to the NCAA championship game. While they lost the game to Kansas, this was probably the finest season in Oklahoma basketball history.
Over his two seasons for the Sooners, Blaylock averaged 18.1 pts, 6.3 assists, and 3.8 steals per game.
After his senior season he was drafted number 12 overall in the NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets, where he spent three seasons before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks. He played seven seasons in Atlanta then was traded to Golden State where he spent the last three seasons of his career.
In his pro career Mookie averaged 13.5 pts, 6.7 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive first team twice and the All-Defensive second team four times, as well as playing in the All-Star game in 1994.
Blaylock finished his pro career 11th all-time in career steals and seventh all-time in steals per game. He is also fifteenth all-time in 3-point field goals made. He holds multiple Atlanta Hawk franchise career records, and is only one of three players to lead the NBA in steals two years in a row. The other two are Alvin Robertson and Magic Johnson.
In the end Mookie Blaylock will go down as arguably the best point guard on the best team in OU Sooner basketball history.
